The first British soldier to plead guilty to a war crime in Iraq was sentenced this week to a year in prison. Cpl. Donald Payne pleaded guilty to inhumanely treating Iraqi civilians, resulting in one death, in the southern city of Basra in 2003. Payne was cleared of charges of manslaughter and perverting justice. The victim, Baha Musa, was among nine Iraqis taken into custody as alleged insurgents. Doctors said he died from asphyxia caused by a stress position.
