Hubble camera fails
The week's news at a glance.
Space
The main camera on the Hubble Space Telescope has gone dark, probably for good, NASA said this week. Officials confirmed that the orbiting observatory’s Advanced Camera for Surveys, which has taken some of Hubble’s most spectacular deep-space photographs, has lost its backup power supply; its main power supply failed last summer. NASA plans a repair mission for September 2008, but scientists were pessimistic that the camera could be fixed. Hubble’s two other cameras continue to function normally.
