Springfield, Ill.
The state of Illinois could reap up to $10 billion if it completes plans, announced this week, to sell its lottery. Democratic Gov. Rod Blagojevich wants to sell the lottery, which collected $2 billion last year and made a $630 million profit, to raise money for schools. The sale would give the state an immediate financial boost, but critics are saying it’s shortsighted to give up a steady revenue stream. Potential bidders include gaming companies and private-equity groups.
