The French Elvis moves away
The week's news at a glance.
Paris
Aging French rocker Johnny Hallyday said this week he is moving to Switzerland to evade France’s high taxes. The 64-year-old Hallyday, known as the French Elvis, has had 18 platinum albums in his career. A prominent conservative, Hallyday has campaigned with Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy, who is running for president next year. Sarkozy’s rival, Socialist candidate Ségolène Royal, wasted no time in capitalizing on Hallyday’s emigration. She said she “would never keep a friend” who abandoned France because of money. Hallyday was made a knight of the French Legion of Honor in 1997.
