Arrests in Strangler case
The week's news at a glance.
Ipswich, U.K.
Police this week arrested two men in connection with the murders of five prostitutes in the Suffolk town of Ipswich. Tom Stephens, 37, a former part-time police officer and supermarket worker, described himself to reporters as a frequent customer of all the dead women, but insisted he was their friend and protector. The second man arrested, Steve Wright, 48, did not comment. Police said he and Stephens do not appear to know each other—ruling out the theory that the two may have acted together. All five victims were found naked in the Ipswich area; at least two of them were strangled. The British media has nicknamed the killer the Suffolk Strangler.
