Israel rethinks warnings
The week's news at a glance.
Gaza
Israel called off two airstrikes on the homes of Palestinian militants in Gaza this week, after hundreds of civilians formed human shields around the houses. “We warn people in advance because we don’t want to harm innocent civilians,” an Israeli army spokesman said, “but after they took advantage of it, we will have to think again.” A similar incident took place two weeks ago, when a crowd of women helped several gunmen escape from a mosque where they were holed up. Israel has been attacking sites around Gaza from which militants launch rockets into Israel. One of the rockets killed an Israeli woman last week. The U.N.’s top human-rights official, Louise Arbour, said the Israeli attacks constituted “massive” human-rights violations.
