Beijing
A young woman’s blog has touched off a debate on single motherhood that is riveting China. Hundreds of thousands of people have posted comments on “Words to My Baby,” a blog kept by a pregnant, unwed woman who calls herself Ground Melon Pig. The woman, a reporter at a Beijing newspaper, defied Chinese convention by deciding to carry her unborn baby to term, even after her boyfriend left her. Most posts are from other women offering advice and support, but many come from critics who write that having a baby out of marriage is immoral. China’s state news agency, Xinhua, reported that the lively debate was a sign of “China’s growing tolerance of diverse opinions.”
