An American Tour De Force
The week's news at a glance.
Paris
U.S. cyclist Floyd Landis came rocketing from behind to win the world’s premier bike race, along with the hearts of the French. Commentators swooned that Landis’ dramatic finish in the Tour de France, despite severe pain from a hip injury, gave the sport new energy. Landis is the third American to win the annual three-week road race, after Greg LeMond’s three wins and Lance Armstrong’s unprecedented seven victories. “Where Armstrong tolerated nothing but deference and sacrifice from his teammates,” said Le Monde in an admiring editorial, “Landis never stopped giving credit to those who helped him.”
