Suu Kyi kept in jail

The week's news at a glance.

Rangoon, Myanmar

The military junta that rules Myanmar has extended the house arrest of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi for another year. The move drew condemnation not only from the Western countries that have long supported Suu Kyi, but also, uncharacteristically, from Myanmar’s Non-Aligned Movement allies Thailand and Malaysia. Suu Kyi, 60, has been in detention for 10 of the past 16 years, and for the last three has been denied almost all contact with the outside world. Her only visitors are a maid and a doctor. A Nobel Peace Prize winner, Suu Kyi led her National League for Democracy to victory in the 1990 elections, but the junta refused to acknowledge the results.
