Riots over new PM
The week's news at a glance.
Solomon Islands
Australian troops went to the Solomon Islands last week to quell rioting over the election of a new prime minister. Many Islanders believe that Snyder Rini bribed his way into office using money from Chinese businessmen. Demonstrators opposed to Rini destroyed the capital’s Chinatown after the election, and hundreds of Chinese nationals fled to China. Aussie troops said they expected more violence this week, after Solomons police arrested two opposition members of Parliament for threatening to behead any lawmaker who supported the government. The Solomons got independence from Britain in 1978; Australia has been helping it with law-and-order issues since 2003.
