Rally against anti-Semitism
The week's news at a glance.
Paris
Tens of thousands of people marched through Paris this week to protest the killing of a French Jew. “This demonstration is a success, but it’s not enough,” said Bernard Kouchner, a leading Socialist politician. “We can’t tolerate the bad smell that has spread throughout this country, and we have to protest against all racist acts.” Ilan Halimi, 23, was kidnapped in January by a Muslim gang seeking ransom money. Police found him barely alive three weeks later, naked, handcuffed, and covered with burns. He died on the way to the hospital. Youssef Fofana, 25, the alleged gang leader, was arrested in Ivory Coast, where he had taken refuge among relatives. He confessed to the kidnapping and is scheduled to be extradited to France next week.
