Heads roll over gas deal
The week's news at a glance.
Kiev, Ukraine
Ukraine’s parliament ousted the government of Prime Minister Yuri Yekhanurov this week, over his deal to buy natural gas from Russia at what amounts to twice the previous price. That’s much less than Russia was demanding, but opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko argued that Ukraine should have locked in the price for longer, particularly as Russia got a guarantee that Ukraine wouldn’t raise pipeline fees for five years. Tymoshenko was President Viktor Yushchenko’s main ally during the 2004 Orange Revolution, as well as his first prime minister. But ever since he fired her last September, she’s been a vocal critic of the government, particularly her replacement, Yekhanurov. President Yushchenko must now name a new government, and elections are scheduled for March.
