Masked Palestinian militants affiliated with the ruling party broke into four different election offices in the West Bank and Gaza this week, firing into the air. The militants were from the Al Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigade, which is affiliated with the Fatah party of Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas. Dozens of them occupied the main election office in Gaza City, saying they were unhappy with the candidates on the Fatah slate. At other offices, gunmen stole computers and a television. No one was injured. “This is a peaceful step to protest the policy of appointments within Fatah,” said Abu Eyad, a spokesman for the gunmen. Fatah’s primaries earlier this month had to be canceled because of militant attacks, so Abbas is picking the Fatah candidates. The election is scheduled for January.
