Trade meeting disrupted
The week's news at a glance.
Hong Kong
Thousands of people protested against globalization in Hong Kong this week at a meeting of World Trade Organization negotiators. Some of the protesters tried to get to conference sites by scaling roadblocks; others attempted to swim from the mainland across Hong Kong Harbor, only to be forced back by police boats. As for the negotiators, they were stalled over when and how to eliminate farm subsidies. Poor countries argue that their farmers can’t compete with Western farmers who get government support.
