Watching Lieberman
The week's news at a glance.
Washington, D.C.
Speculation flared around Sen. Joe Lieberman this week after the Connecticut Democrat, a vocal supporter of President Bush’s Iraq policies, met with Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld over breakfast. News reports have suggested that Rumsfeld might retire next year, and that Lieberman is in line to replace him. Rumsfeld said he had “no plans to retire.” Lieberman aides said Rumsfeld merely wanted the senator’s impressions after his fourth trip to Iraq in 17 months. “The United States Senate is where Sen. Lieberman wants to be,” a spokeswoman said. But many liberals have been chagrined by Lieberman’s support of Bush, and former Connecticut Gov. Lowell Weicker said he may come out of retirement to challenge Lieberman in his re-election bid next year.
