Mass chicken slaughter
The week's news at a glance.
Beijing
China took drastic measures to combat avian flu this week, after confirming a bird flu outbreak among chickens. Some 6 million chickens in the affected area in the northeast were killed, and the sale of birds was banned in nearby Beijing. Most Chinese buy only chickens and ducks that are slaughtered in front of them, to ensure freshness, but that’s no longer an option in the capital. Officials are now going door to door, confiscating birds being raised in courtyards or coops. China has not yet confirmed a bird flu case in a human this winter.
