New Orleans
Officials inspecting buildings flooded by Hurricane Katrina say that 30,000 to 50,000 homes in New Orleans will probably have to be demolished, The New York Times reported this week. That figure is lower than some earlier estimates, but it still represents about a quarter of the city’s entire housing stock. The hard-hit Lower Ninth Ward, an African-American neighborhood, is so badly damaged and prone to new flooding that it remains sealed off. “They’re treating us like we’re already dead,” said resident Willie Calhoun.
