Huge drug bust
The week's news at a glance.
Las Palmas, Spain
Police arrested Spain’s most notorious drug lord this week in the culmination of a two-year investigation. Daniel Baulo Carballo has led the Os Caneos gang since his father was killed by Colombian assassins in 1994. He was nabbed this week when customs officers stormed his boat, docked in the Canary Islands, and confiscated 5 tons of cocaine. The huge haul, one of the largest in Europe, has a street value of nearly $200 million and was thought to be destined for Britain. Spain and the U.K. have the highest rates of cocaine use in the E.U. In 2004, about 2 percent of all adults in those two countries reported recent cocaine use.
