Damascus
Syria has cut off all contacts with the U.S. military and the CIA, The New York Times reported this week. Syrian Ambassador Imad Moustapha said his government was angry about U.S. allegations that Syria was doing nothing to stop the flow of fighters, money, and equipment across the border to the Iraqi insurgency. Moustapha said that even after Syria pulled all its troops from Lebanon, as President Bush had requested, and even after it arrested and handed over a half-brother of Saddam Hussein, Bush continued to criticize Syria. “We thought, Why should we continue to cooperate?” Moustapha said. Many analysts believe Iraqi Baathists who fled the U.S. invasion are now living in Syria, where they are helping to plan and fund the insurgency.
