The Bush administration this week warned that the U.S. and other nations will punish North Korea if it conducts a nuclear test. Evidence is mounting that Pyongyang is preparing to test a nuclear bomb. Until now, the Bush administration has avoided making specific threats for fear of provoking North Korean leader Kim Jong Il, but National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley said “actions would have to be taken” if Kim doesn’t back down. A leader of Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party said Japan will ask the United Nations to impose sanctions if Pyongyang goes through with a test.
