Ethics showdown
The week's news at a glance.
Washington, D.C.
Pressure mounted on the House Ethics Committee to investigate Majority Leader Tom DeLay after new questions were raised about his conduct. The Washington Post reported this week that lobbyist Jack Abramoff’s personal credit card had been used to pay $6,938 for overseas airline tickets for DeLay, a possible violation of House ethics guidelines. Republican leaders promised to look into the matter if Democrats stopped blocking the Ethics Committee from working. But Democratic leaders said that first, Republicans must lift new committee rules the GOP pushed through this year that could help DeLay avoid censure.
