Deadly stampede
The week's news at a glance.
Maharashtra, India
Up to 300 people were killed in a stampede this week during a festival at a Hindu temple. Thousands of pilgrims were patiently ascending to the hilltop temple of the goddess Mandhar Devi when a fire broke out in a souvenir stall. Fleeing the flames, the crowd funneled into a narrow part of the stone staircase. “People got suffocated in the crush,” said shopkeeper Sanjay Mistry. “There was a lot of chaos and cries of ‘Many people are dead.’”
