President re-elected
The week's news at a glance.
Zagreb, Croatia
Stipe Mesic won a second term as president of Croatia this week, and vowed to lead his country into the European Union. The presidency isn’t a very powerful position in Croatia, but it commands moral authority. Mesic, whose first term began in 2000, is widely credited with ending the authoritarian style of his predecessor, Franjo Tudjman. He also played a key role in Croatia’s decision not to join the U.S.-led coalition in Iraq.
