Avricourt, France
An anti-nuclear activist was struck by a train and killed this week while protesting the transport of radioactive waste from France to Germany. Sebastien Briat, 21, had chained himself to a rail, but a train came by earlier than expected. Nuclear waste from Germany is sent by rail to France for reprocessing, and then back to Germany for storage. Protests against nuclear transport used to be a regular occurrence in both France and Germany, with activists arguing that a single accident could cause a disastrous radioactive spill. The German government recently decided to phase out the use of nuclear power by 2020. Since then, protests have dropped off.
