Ethnic clash

The week's news at a glance.

Henan province, China

The Chinese government declared martial law in Henan province this week because of violence between ethnic Huis, who are Muslim, and majority Hans. After a Hui cabdriver hit and killed a young Han girl, a fight broke out that soon spread to neighboring villages, where Hans and Huis began torching one another’s homes, in an escalating series of reprisals. Thousands of military police poured into the province. Western journalists reported that some 150 people were killed; Chinese media did not report the incident.
