Multiple plane crashes
The week's news at a glance.
Two passengers survived the crash of a commuter plane in Missouri last week, and climbed free before the wreckage burst into flames. Thirteen people died. One of the survivors, Dr. John Krogh, said he heard “terrible screams” from passengers who couldn’t get out. “There were screams of some people as they were dying,” he said. “I thought, Oh, gosh. Is there anything I can do?” Another small plane crashed in Virginia in dense fog, killing 10 members of Hendrick Motorsports, a leading NASCAR auto-racing team. The son, brother, and twin nieces of the company’s owner, Rick Hendrick, were among the dead. The team’s drivers, who were not on board, include Jeff Gordon and Terry Labonte. Another plane crashed in Illinois after a man’s parachute got caught on its tail. Five people, the pilot, and four members of a sky diving club, parachuted to safety, but the man with the snagged parachute, Bill Jensen, 38, was killed.
