Putin stumps for Bush
The week's news at a glance.
Moscow
Russian President Vladimir Putin this week said that al Qaida wanted President Bush to lose his re-election bid. “International terrorism has as its goal the inflicting of the biggest possible damage on President Bush, preventing him from being elected to a second term,” Putin said. “If they achieve their goal, then that will give international terrorism a new impulse and extra power.” Putin, who opposed the Iraq war, stopped short of an outright endorsement of Bush, saying he would respect the choice of the American people.
