Israeli retaliation
The week's news at a glance.
Gaza
A Palestinian rocket attack that killed two Israeli toddlers last week has prompted the largest Israeli incursion into Gaza in four years. Gaza is fenced in, preventing Hamas fighters from getting into Israel on suicide missions. Instead, they lob rockets over the barrier toward Israeli towns and settlements. Usually the rockets land harmlessly. But after last week’s bloodshed, Israel sent in tanks and troops, killing at least 40 Palestinian militants and 28 civilians. Israel said it would withdraw after Hamas stopped launching rockets for three days, an offer Hamas declined. In a separate attack this week, Israel assassinated Bashir ad-Dabbash, the chief military commander of the Palestinian group Islamic Jihad. The group is responsible for numerous suicide bombings.
