Picking up after Ivan
The week's news at a glance.
Pensacola, Fla.
President Bush visited Alabama and Florida this week to promise help in rebuilding coastal towns ripped apart by Hurricane Ivan. “We’re praying for you,” Bush told rattled survivors in Pensacola, Fla. Ivan—the third hurricane to slam the region since Aug. 10—killed 75 people in the Caribbean, and another 50 as it plowed deep into the U.S. The storm spawned 48 tornadoes and caused flooding as it pressed north through Georgia, the Carolinas, Virginia, West Virginia, and Maryland. Together, hurricanes Charley, Frances, and Ivan caused an estimated $25 billion in damage, more than twice the hurricane losses sustained in an average year. The hurricane season still has 10 weeks to go.
