Fascist tribute torn down
The week's news at a glance.
Slunj, Croatia
Authorities this week dismantled a statue honoring Croatia’s most notorious fascist general, Jure Francetic. “We will not allow Croatia to be imprisoned by the past,” said Prime Minister Ivo Sanader. Croatia had a brief fascist period during World War II. After the Nazis invaded, they installed Croatian fascists in a puppet government, and Croatian troops killed thousands of Jews and Serbs. Francetic headed the Black Legion, which was responsible for the worst massacres. The statue to him was erected just four years ago, by villagers acting without the government’s permission.
