Thule, Greenland
A group of Greenland natives brought a suit against Denmark at the European Court of Human Rights this week, seeking to get back the land they were expelled from in 1953. Denmark resettled the Inughuit tribe during the Cold War to make way for a U.S. military base. Last fall, the Danish Supreme Court granted the 900-member tribe a small financial award, but the group says it won’t survive unless it gets its former hunting grounds back. “We need these animals,” said activist Uusaqqak Qujaukitsoq, “and this land.” The Pentagon, which is considering expanding the arctic base, called the matter a domestic Danish affair.
