Harvard University plans to sidestep federal restrictions and produce stem cells for medical research, The Boston Globe reported this week. President Bush, citing ethical concerns, has blocked federal funding for scientists experimenting with new lines of the human embryonic cells. Dr. David Scadden, one of the leaders of the Harvard program, said the university would try to raise $100 million to launch a research center that wouldn’t need federal money. Scientists hope to use stem cells to rebuild healthy tissue and cure Parkinson’s, diabetes, and other diseases. “If I turned my back on this,” Scadden said, “I just wouldn’t forgive myself.”
