The Bible and the Grand Canyon
The week's news at a glance.
Washington, D.C.
A battle over religion has broken out in the Grand Canyon. The National Park Service recently ordered the return of three plaques inscribed with Bible verses that were taken off display in the Grand Canyon last year. Senior officials also ruled that a book saying that God created the Grand Canyon a few thousand years ago, in six days, should remain on sale in park bookstores. A Park Service spokesman told The New York Times that officials were merely trying to respect alternative views on how the world was created. Critics said the Bush administration was promoting “faith-based parks” to please religious conservatives.
