Hard-liners jeer Sharon
The week's news at a glance.
Jerusalem
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon was jeered and booed this week when he told a convention of his Likud Party that Israel was closing down some Jewish settlements in the West Bank. Sharon said Israel would comply with the U.S.-backed road map for peace, which requires withdrawal from some settlements. But, he added, if the Palestinians do not hold up their end and crack down on terrorism, Israel will unilaterally draw a border through the West Bank, “from which we will prevent passage into our territory.” So far, Sharon has ordered six West Bank settlement outposts dismantled, and the army has drawn up a list that includes 22 more.
