Beating caught on tape
The week's news at a glance.
Cincinnati
Racial tensions surged in Cincinnati this week after a 350-pound black man, Nathaniel Jones, died following a videotaped beating by two white policemen. The tape showed Jones, 41, being clubbed repeatedly in the legs after lunging at an officer. Cincinnati erupted in riots three years ago after a white officer shot and killed an unarmed black man. “How many of our people have to die before the city decides to do something about it?” said Nathaniel Livingston Jr., a local activist. The Rev. Jesse Jackson called for an investigation. A coroner found that Jones had an enlarged heart, and cocaine and PCP in his blood. Mayor Charlie Luken said the officers did no more than necessary to protect themselves from a large, violent attacker.
