A group of former Eastern European leaders last week launched a campaign to help topple Fidel Castro’s communist regime in Cuba. Dubbed the International Committee for Democracy in Cuba, the group includes former Czech president Vaclav Havel, former Polish leader Lech Walesa, and former Russian dissident Elena Bonner—all fervent anti-communists. In a letter published in several European papers, the committee urged Western countries to support Cuban opposition forces, describing the Castro regime as showing signs “of weakness and desperation.” A Cuban official said of the campaign: “I couldn’t imagine a greater level of interference and a greater level of ignorance toward our country.”
