Saddam and 9/11
The week's news at a glance.
Washington, D.C.
President Bush stated flatly that there was no evidence that Saddam Hussein had any role in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. “There is no question Saddam Hussein had al Qaida ties,” Bush said. “We’ve had no evidence that Saddam Hussein was involved with September the 11th.” The remarks came days after Vice President Dick Cheney gave the opposite impression on NBC’s Meet the Press, when he said that establishing a stable democracy in Iraq would disrupt “the terrorists who have had us under assault for many years, but most especially on 9/11.” A recent poll indicated that 70 percent of Americans believed the ousted Iraqi leader played a personal role in the terrorist attacks.
