SARS returns
The week's news at a glance.
Singapore
A Singapore man tested positive for SARS this week, the first new case of the pneumonia-like respiratory disease to be reported anywhere in more than two months. The man had been working in a microbiology laboratory that was used for SARS research, but it is not known how he contracted the disease. No other workers at the lab have tested positive. “It appears to be a single isolated case,” said the Health Ministry. But the government is taking no chances and has quarantined 25 people who came in contact with the sick man. SARS, which originated in China late last year, killed more than 800 people—including 33 in Singapore—before being declared contained in July.
