Bishop hid abuse
The week's news at a glance.
Phoenix
The Roman Catholic bishop of Phoenix has admitted to prosecutors that he covered up allegations of sexual abuse by priests for decades, reported The Arizona Republic. In one of the most candid confessions since the church sex scandal exploded last year, Bishop Thomas O’Brien acknowledged that he ignored accusations of abuse against 50 priests and church employees, and allowed them to continue working with children. He agreed to hand over the day-to-day duties of running the diocese to another church official, and to have an independent advocate handle any future abuse investigations. In exchange for O’Brien’s cooperation, government lawyers promised not to have him arrested.
