Gruesome murder theory
The week's news at a glance.
Ciudad Juarez, Mexico
Dozens of women murdered near Ciudad Juarez, a Mexican border town, might have been butchered so their organs could be sold, a prosecutor said this week. Three hundred women have been murdered in Juarez in the last 10 years. Ninety of them were kidnapped, raped, killed, and buried in the desert. The crimes fell under the jurisdiction of local authorities, but federal prosecutors have complained that police bungled the investigations. Federal prosecutors reopened 14 cases after an informant reported burying three bodies that had been “hollowed out,” with their organs removed. “There is a sense of panic here, especially among the mothers,” a human rights activist said. “Every time they see their daughters go out, they are afraid they will never return.”
