U.S. pushes road map
The week's news at a glance.
Jerusalem
U.S. officials this week began what promises to be a long series of separate meetings with Palestinians and Israelis to implement the “road map” for Middle East peace. Created by the U.S., U.N., E.U., and Russia, the new peace initiative aims to establish a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza by 2005. The difficult, intermediate steps include the dismantling of Palestinian terrorist groups and the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Palestinian cities. President Bush is determined “to move aggressively and energetically toward the two-state vision,” said U.S. envoy William Burns.
