Killer tornadoes
The week's news at a glance.
Kansas City
A deadly swarm of tornadoes tore through Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, and Tennessee this week, killing at least 38 people. The damage was worst in Missouri, where 17 people died. Dry air from the Rocky Mountains hit moist air coming off the Gulf of Mexico, creating a rare, turbulent mix that spat out one major tornado after another. In all, 83 twisters were reported. One leveled the heart of Pierce City, Mo., population 1,385. “We heard a terrible suction, and we took cover in our bathroom,” said Carmen Archer, a Pierce City shopkeeper. “We got up, and everything was gone.”
