Flag flap

The week's news at a glance.

Belgrade, Serbia and Montenegro

Serbia and Montenegro are bickering over which flag to use for their newly named country. The last two republics of Yugoslavia had been using the old Yugoslav flag: three horizontal bands of blue, white, and red. Now that they have shed the Yugoslav name and formed a new, looser federation called Serbia and Montenegro, the two republics need a new flag. Serbia has proposed using the Serbian flag. That suggestion “symbolically violates the essence of the union as a union of two historic states,” said Montenegrin official Branislav Radulovic. “It also demonstrates unconcealed arrogance.”
