Communists support Iraq
The week's news at a glance.
Moscow
A delegation of 42 members of the Russian parliament, mostly Communists and ultra-leftists, flew to Iraq this week to express solidarity with the Iraqi people. Communist Party officials organized anti-U.S. protests in cities across Russia, but turnout was low, and the wet, snowy weather made it impossible to light the American flag on fire. Most Duma deputies, though, who belong to center-right parties, said they would support military action to disarm Iraq, as long as the U.N. passed a resolution authorizing war.
