Prisoner attempts suicide
The week's news at a glance.
Guantanamo Bay, Cuba
A prisoner tried to hang himself at the U.S. Naval Base at Guantanamo Bay, The Miami Herald reported this week. Guards found the man, who is in his early 20s, dangling in his cell on Jan. 16. They rushed him to the base hospital, where he was “stable but in serious condition.” Eleven prisoners have attempted suicide in the 13 months the base has been used to house detainees in the war on terrorism. Vienna Colucci of Amnesty International said the 600 prisoners are cooped up with no end in sight, and the “indefinite legal limbo” takes a psychological toll. Commanders are considering moving some detainees from 7-by-8-foot cells into barracks as a reward for good behavior.
