Weather turns deadly
The week's news at a glance.
Mossy Grove, Tenn.
Violent storms spitting tornadoes and hail smashed through the South and Midwest this week, killing 36 people, injuring more than 200, and leaving dozens missing. The damage from 70 twisters stretched from Louisiana to Pennsylvania, but Tennessee and Alabama were hit hardest. Four people died in Mossy Grove, Tenn. There were only 20 homes in town, and a dozen of them were flattened. “It’s mass destruction, death,” said police officer Ken Morgan. One tornado blasted apart an Ohio movie theater minutes after a showing of The Santa Clause 2. Manager Scott Shaffer saved the 50 moviegoers by herding them into a sheltered hallway, the only area to withstand the winds. “I was too scared to panic,” he said.
