Americans seek asylum
The week's news at a glance.
Ottawa
Three Californians have asked for asylum in Canada, saying the U.S. government is out to get them for growing pot. “It’s a war zone down there,” said Renee Boje, one of the refugees. Hundreds of Americans have reportedly headed north in the months since Attorney General John Ashcroft ordered a crackdown on cooperatives set up to distribute medical marijuana. Immigration experts said the trio of Boje, Steve Kubby, and Ken Hayes—all wanted in the U.S. on drug charges—should not learn the words to “O Canada!” yet. Canada has never granted a U.S. citizen refugee status.
