Volvo’s first pure electric-only car and the spearhead of its EV transformation, the C40 rides on the same CMA platform as the XC40 and Polestar 2, said Autocar. It’s available with just two pure electric drivetrains: the Recharge, with a single 228bhp front motor and 67kWh battery pack giving a 369-mile range; or the Recharge Twin, with two 201bhp motors, a 75kWh battery pack and a range of just 273 miles.
Owing to its brick-like proportions and poor aerodynamics, the C40 only does an unimpressive 2.8 miles per kWh, said The Daily Telegraph. But the Recharge Twin, with a total of 402bhp which can do 0-62mph in 4.7 seconds, is fast, despite not being ostensibly sporty. It’s comfortable to drive, with powerful, well-balanced brakes and lots of safety features. Steering is precise but inert, and body control is good.
The C40 comes in three trims, Core, Plus and Ultimate, said Car Magazine. Vegan upholstery will appeal to some; it’s a pity the plastic dash panels feel a bit cheap. There’s a nine-inch portrait touchscreen with Google-based software, which works well for navigation, but lacks Android or Apple screen mirroring. The high-riding seats are comfy, with decent head and leg room in the rear, but the boot is pretty shallow. UK price starts from £44,800.
