Today's back pages: Adrian the hero as Liverpool claim Super Cup
A round up of the sport headlines from UK newspapers on Thursday 15 August
Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian dominates the back pages today after his heroics in the Uefa Super Cup, which the Reds won on penalties.
The former West Ham keeper, brought in as cover for injured Alisson this week, saved the decisive penalty from Tammy Abraham to earn Jurgen Klopp’s side victory in the European curtain raiser in Istanbul.
“Try telling Liverpool the Super Cup does not matter,” says the Daily Telegraph. “Winning is a habit and Liverpool have their second European trophy in a few short months and while it felt a little mad that extra-time was played, that players were dropping to the turf with cramp and others folded in exhaustion in 24 degree heat beyond midnight there was simply no relenting; no inch given.”

It was another Istanbul penalty shoot-out victory in a European final for Liverpool. “It was not the Champions League climax, as in 2005, it was in a different stadium, but it was important. It mattered,” says The Times. “It felt cruel on Chelsea, which will please the Liverpool supporters even more.”
