Ten Things You Need to Know Today: Tuesday 13 Sep 2011
JAMES MURDOCH RECALLED BY MPSJames Murdoch, the chairman of News International, is to face more questions from MPs investigating the News of the World phone hacking scandal. He has been recalled because of conflicting evidence about how much he knew about practise. It was also revealed today that the mother of a 7/7 bombing victim is to sue News International over hacking. TALIBAN ATTACKS US EMBASSY IN KABULThe Taliban has claimed responsibility for a series of gun and suicide bomb attacks in Kabul. Several blasts took place near the US embassy and at least six people were killed in four different locations. Several insurgents took refuge in a high-rise building overlooking the embassy district and exchanged gunfire with police. They have lynched black Africans suspected of being mercenaries, and tortured a number of captured soldiers. Amnesty has urged the National Transitional Council to rein in its supporters and try to combat xenophobia. CAMERON IN MOScOW: KGB 'TRIED TO RECRUIT ME'Prime Minister David Cameron told students in Moscow yesterday that the KGB "tried to recruit me" at the beach resort of Yalta when he visited Russia during his gap year in 1985, but he had "failed the interview". The one-day trip failed to break the diplomatic stalemate over the murder in London of former KGB agent Alexander Litvinenko. Why Cameron got a chilly reception in Moscow NEW MET CHIEF VOWS 'ALL-OUT WAR' ON CRIMEBernard Hogan-Howe, former chief constable of Merseyside, was appointed the new Commissioner of the Met Police by the Queen yesterday, beating three others to the job in interviews with Theresa May and Boris Johnson. He said he would wage "all-out war" on crime to turn the Met into a force that criminals fear and the public trusts. HIGH PROFILE MPS THREATENED BY BOUNDARY CHANGESProposals for new constituency boundaries in England and Northern Ireland have been unveiled. They are part of plans to cut the number of MPs by 50 to 600 by the next general election. High profile MPs including Tories George Osborne and Ken Clarke, Chris Huhne and Vince Cable of the Lib Dems, and Ed Balls, Hilary Benn and Tessa Jowell of Labour could see their seats disappear. GEORGE OSBORNE 'ALMOST INDEBTED TO COULSON'Mark Lewis, a solicitor representing victims of phone hacking at the News of the World, yesterday claimed Chancellor George Osborne had supported Andy Coulson for the job of Number 10 media director because he was "almost indebted" to him. This was because the paper had put "a gloss" on its story of former prostitute Natalie Rowe's claim that Osborne once took cocaine with her. Dominatrix whips up a storm for Osborne MAN ARRESTED IN KENYAN MURDER HUNTKenyan police have arrested a man suspected of helping plan the attack on the Kiwayu Safari Village in which Faber and Faber director David Tebbutt was shot dead and his wife, Judith, kidnapped. The hunt for the armed gang and their hostage continues, with friends fearful because Judith Tebbutt is deaf and will have difficulty communicating. MILIBAND HECKLED BY TUC DELEGATESLabour leader Ed Miliband was heckled by delegates at the TUC conference as he described the public sector strikes over pension reform as a "mistake". His comments came as unions prepare for more industrial action this autumn. Miliband was also jeered for claiming that academy schools had improved education in his constituency. DJOKOVIC WINS THIRD TENNIS MAJOR THIS YEARSerb Novak Djokovic beat defending champion Rafael Nadal in straight sets last night to win the US Open. He now holds the Australian, Wimbledon and US Open titles. Serena Williams, who had lost the women's final to Samantha Stosur on Sunday, was fined $2,000 for her on-court outburst. She told the umpire: "You're a hater, unattractive inside". Furious rant from Williams sours US Open final defeat
